Highlander: the Series

The Sea Witch

Okey dokey.

So Richie's old girlfriend's current boyfriend gets dusted during a drug deal, and she (Nikki) ends up carrying the cash and the drugs. Richie offers safe harbor to her and her kid, and she gets real hostile to Tessa, who tries to be kind to the poor li'l moppet. And she gets real pissed off at Duncan who dumps the drugs down the sink. So Duncan has to confront the guy who really owns the drugs, the Mr. Big, the Evil Immortal of the Episode: Voshin ... who just happens to have been the sea captain who betrayed Duncan in the flashbacks when Duncan was trying to smuggle Jewish refugees out of danger.

So we all know that Voshin Must Die, regardless of the fact that his name doesn't begin with a K. This was accomplished via a cool duel on board the Sea Witch II, during which Voshin takes a Fatal Dive into the briny and gets whacked by his own ship's propellers. In lieu of headless corpse, he is represented by some blood in the water and a tattered rope hauled up by Duncan.

Which brings us back to Nikki who realizes the Errors of Her Ways (which are many) and the Poor Li'l Moppet who leave the area to live in Ohio or someplace with less water.

There are many themes to this episode: the Tessa-as-childless-hulk theme, where she denies her longings for children; the Just-Say-No theme, in which Duncan preaches the gospel of how drugs are better for drains than for people; the Richie-as-Gallant-Idiot theme, in which Richie's need to rescue women in distress is once again played out; and of course, the ever popular K'Immie o' the Week theme, in which an Evil Immortal gets judged, juried, and executed by Duncan MacLeod of the Clan MacLeod (even though the execution was performed by the ship's propellers in a non starring, non credited role).

Questions:

1. Did we really enjoy Duncan's lecture on drugs all that much or did we seem to see the image of Nancy Reagan superimposed over his face as he yammered on?

2. Was Nikki one of the dumbest women who ever lived or what? And isn't she just a prime example of how Richie has No Taste In Women? (Except for Angie who is not in this episode, but who actually has a brain AND the good sense to be Richie's friend, not his girlfriend.)

3. Did we believe Tessa's avowal to Duncan that life with him was better than having kids? Are we of the opinion that Raising Richie may have had some impact on her view of Children In The House?

4. Duncan's pants: discuss.

5. Essay question: Write a Watcher's Closing Entry for the death of Voshin at the blade of his own ship, the Sea Witch II. Try to make him seem heroic in battle as he splashed and gurgled, and finally sinks to the ocean's floor as just so much Chunks o' Voshin ... and wouldn't Chunks o' Voshin be a great name for a rock band?
