Mac is surprised to find that Carl Robinson, the man he saved from being hanged by a Klan lynch mob back in the 20's in Louisiana, is also the man who stole Charlie's car in modern Seacouver. Charlie takes exception to being ripped off and reports the theft to the police, one of whom is a Watcher. A racist Renegade Watcher with a chip on his shoulder and an axe in the trunk of his squad car.
Charlie and Carl don't get along well, but Carl offers to pay Charlie back for his car and Charlie calls off the police hunt. But that Renegade Watcher is still after Carl's head. After a couple of abortive attempts to separate Carl's head from his shoulders, the Watcher is stopped from his plan to kill Carl forever by his rookie partner.
Got a subplot here. Carl is a great pitcher who has lost hope that bigotry can be conquered, so became a thief. Duncan is a Hero who keeps trying to convince Carl that some folks are colorblind. In the end, Carl is pitching baseball with the hope of someday becoming a politician.
Questions:
1. In today's political climate, is it remotely possible that a) Carl's history as a thief and b) Carl's existence as an Immortal for a hundred years could be ignored by the press as he a) becomes a major baseball star and/or b) runs for public office?
2. Charlie was pretty grumpy about Carl throughout the episode, and with good reason. Carl stole his car. And yet, I get the feeling that we're supposed to be on Carl's side of the argument because Charlie is such a whiner and so generally annoying. Does anyone else get this feeling?
3. If you were to make a comment concerning Duncan's pants in this episode, what would that comment be? Extra credit: comment upon Duncan's hair in this episode.
4. Racist cop Carter's white partner is named Kenny. Does this foreshadow any future Kenny's who might show up in the series?
5. Carter is a Watcher who, apparently, had information as to Carl's Immortality; one might suppose that he got that information from Carl's own Watcher. Or is it possible that Carter was Carl's own Watcher?
6. Carl could have been a K'Immie, due to his name and his larcenous ways. But he wasn't. He was a good guy, and in his own way, as thoroughly annoying as Charlie. Does Duncan choose his friends as penance for his own sins?
