Unholy Alliance, Part I

Xavier St. Cloud, an Immortal who prefers not to dirty his hands in killing, takes on a partner in James Horton who promises to make him the Last Immortal. Mortal thugs gun down Immortals and stand back while Xavier beheads them. An interesting alliance, unholy in that it involves mortals in Immortal affairs, and breaks the Rule prescribing one-on-one combat in The Game.

Duncan MacLeod is killed by gunfire during one of Xavier and Horton's ambushes, witnessed by Charlie who is almost mortally injured himself. As if Xavier and Horton and Charlie were not presenting problems enough to MacLeod, out pops agent Renee Delaney to investigate the whole affair, and to drive Duncan to distraction by asking for help, then pulling a gun on him.

Duncan confronts Horton in a mausoleum and moves to kill him, but Horton reminds him that they are on holy ground as he makes his escape. From his hospital bed Charlie, trying not-quite-hard-enough to gasp his last breath, demands once again to know the secrets of Duncan MacLeod, who foolishly promises Charlie that he'll tell all before Charlie dies.

Questions:

1. Discuss Agent Renee Delaney's character. Do you suppose she pulls a weapon on all persons she intends to ask for information and assistance in an investigation or is it merely her immediate infatuation with Mac that makes her so trigger happy?

2. There is something innately illogical about the partnership between Horton and St. Cloud. Given Horton's stated plan to rid the world of all Immortals, who might have been a better Immortal partner for him? Given St. Cloud's inclination to kill to support a lavish lifestyle, who might have been a better mortal partner for him? Be inventive. Let your minds range freely over the possibilities, utilizing any fictional and non-fictional characters, as you please.

3. How would St. Cloud look if he wore Duncan MacLeod's pants? His ponytail? Would either be an improvement to St. Cloud's appearance?

4. Speak up *now* if you were hoping Charlie was truly gasping his last breath while lying on that hospital bed.
