He is a K'Immie without a "K". He is John Durgan or Armand Thorne, depending upon the century, and he is rotten to the core in any time. He murders Joe's new girlfriend when she discovers that part of his fabulous art collection is stolen. Mac makes the connection between Durgan and Thorne and plots along with Amanda to get Thorne out into the open so his head will be vulnerable.
There's a nice flashback with Mac in Montana in 1817 where the filthy and illiterate Durgan murders a schoolmarm and a priest, and steals the Cross of St. Antoine, which gives Durgan an Appreciation of the Finer Things and changes his life. It doesn't make him a better person, though he does change his name to Thorne, dresses better, makes a boatload of money, and surrounds himself with bodyguards.
Amanda and Mac steal the cross out of Thorne's private museum. In retribution, Thorne kidnaps Joe and offers to exchange Joe for the cross on Holy Ground, and it might have worked if Duncan hadn't hidden Amanda inside the church so Thorne would feel Da Buzz and think Duncan was inside, while Duncan was actually waiting for Thorne to leave the sanctuary of the church so he could challenge Thorne. The fight is on. Duncan wins, of course. Quickening. Duncan and Amanda leave the cross at the church.
Questions:
1. Durgan had exceedingly awful teeth, especially for an Immortal, and Thorne's weren't much better ... though cleaner. This leads to speculation as to the processes used for esthetic improvement in the smile of an Immortal, though we might all agree that Durgan/Thorne's smile was not something one would wish to encounter in a dark alley. Do we suppose Immortal teeth would regenerate in their formerly ugly state if a dentist were to have her way with braces and wires and porcelain overlays?
2. The Cross of St. Antoine was supposed to be valuable, or was it? It kind of looked like gold foil wrapped over a styrofoam base to me. If it were supposed to be solid gold, would a priest in 1817 Montana have it? Didn't it seem quite light for a piece of solid gold of that size?
3. Duncan really looked good in that flashback, though buying jeans and shirts without trying them on seems a mite wrong. A guy with Duncan's build needs to look for clothing that will accommodate his muscular slender/muscular frame and mold to his ... uh ... never mind. Just assume this is a question regarding Duncan's pants and hair and comment accordingly. Or sit and stare into space while you think private thoughts and dream private dreams.
4. Amanda was supposedly dragged out of retirement by Duncan in order to steal the cross from Thorne's museum, but while they were inside, she picked up a couple things that weren't really on the shopping list. This seems to indicate a conflict in her motivation. Or was her retirement all a lie to make Duncan feel guilty when he asked her to do what came naturally?
