Highlander: the Series

Armageddon

Ahriman is on the move.

Duncan is searching for the key to defeating the demon.

In the guise of Horton, Ahriman tells Joe not to help MacLeod. Joe has the Watchers helping search for clues to previous battles, and four Watchers are killed in the attempt. Joe withdraws the Watcher organization, but remains in the search himself.

A Tibetan singing bowl allows Duncan to enter the place where Ahriman dwells, but does not give him the answer. He will not defeat Ahriman with a sword.

Ahriman is working on the emotions of Father Robert Beaufort, who is mourning the recent suicide of his brother Jackie. Father Robert is having a crisis of faith that is fodder for Ahriman's cruelty.

Ahriman visits Joe again, and offers the restoration of his legs as a reward for abandoning Duncan. For a brief moment, Joe is whole again, and then is dropped to the floor when he refuses to accept Ahriman's bribe.

Father Robert is on the verge of suicide himself when MacLeod finds him and prevents him from carrying out the act.

Mac finally finds the key in the words of a German mystic. He must conquer Ahriman with peace. He again enters Ahriman's demesne, where Ahriman tries to force Duncan to fight him. Mac tells Ahriman that the battle is over, and counters every strike against him with the smooth avoidance of a martial arts dance. Mac has accepted that evil is a part of him, and always has been. He has made peace with it and with himself.

Questions:

1. What does the fact that Duncan had to overcome Ahriman with peace, rather than to defeat him with force, say about the nature of the ongoing Immortal/Demon relationship?

2. If there is both good and evil in Duncan MacLeod of the Clan MacLeod, the Immortal Champion, is there also both good and evil in Ahriman?

3. In the Holy Hot Tub, Duncan fought his evil katana-wielding self with the MacLeod sword, in the same sort of interior battle that he began fighting with Ahriman. In the case of GDM against EDM, it apparently worked. In the case of Ahriman, Mac had to completely avoid the fight. Could a melding of EDM with GDM have made Duncan MacLeod a stronger person or merely an insane person? Is it possible Mac should have gone through the process of assimilating EDM rather than cleansing him in the Holy Hot Tub?

4. How would the peaceful acceptance of a demon defeat a demon of such power and evil?
